Default 81 Gas Marathon backfiring

After it is ridden a while (warmed up good) on deceleration. I searched posts and see I need to check my throttle adjustments, is the throttle adjustment most likely the cause?

I replaced a blown head gasket and the cylinder is terribly scored, might this contribute to the backfire issue?

Is the timing adjustable?

The guts in the original muffler were detached rattling around (I replaced it). I am wondering if was backfiring for a while and this is what destroyed the muffler?

Backfire can be caused by the throttle release not closing the throttle plate all the way. This will allow gas to still flow when the engine runs down with no spark but when you hit the peddle again the fuel is already in and will backfire even in the muffler. Can cause seal failure but I do not think you will be getting it from the scoring other than some compression lose. Also check that you have not put in a hot plug.

Installed a spring on the throttle cable to allow for start before throttle plate open/stop (kill) after throttle plate close and this corrected the backfire issue. Thanks
