Shimmed clutch ??
I shimmed my drive clutch today with hopes of an improvement. There isn't a noticeable difference. From what I've read I though it was a sure thing. It slows down on hills just like before. It's running good just want a little more on the hills. What am I missing?

Re: Shimmed clutch ??
In CVT transmissions the driven clutch senses the load
and backshifts to keep the engine running at a set speed. try more pre wrap on the secondary or a stiffer spring in the secondary. |

Re: Shimmed clutch ??
you need to shim or replace the spring in the driven for what you want.

Re: Shimmed clutch ??
Is the governor unhooked? Everything else is pointless if its' still connected.Shimming my Marathon Drive/Primary clutch was the only clutch mod I did(secondary/driven was stock),and the difference was Nite/Day with 22" tires and stock belt.

Re: Shimmed clutch ??
It is unhooked. That was gonna be my next question. When people talk about being careful of over revving with the governor unhooked. From what I've seen I don't think it's possible on mine. I also checked to make sure the throttle is opening all the way, and it is.

Re: Shimmed clutch ??
I honestly think that the only way you could over-rev a 2pg,with 22" tires is on a steep downhill run wide open.Maybe with stock-tires you could over-rev,but I never ran mine with them,so I don't know, but I'll put money on it over-revving.I ran mine flat-footed all the time for 4 summers, and it still was running when I swapped to big-block power. They are just underpowered enough, that they are usually under load, more than screaming, unless you fly downhill, then just back off the gas a bit.Hope this helps.

Re: Shimmed clutch ??
Pachanga your posts about shimming the primary is what inspired me to do so. Great info by the way. The spring shop knew exactly what I was talking about with the u bolt washers. I'm just trying to get the old girl to hold strong on the hills. I'm not real concerned with top speed. I don't expect this little motor to scream down the road, and I'm ok with that. I'm not real sure about tearing into the secondary, I may not be equipped with the right tools.

Re: Shimmed clutch ??
The hills are the biggest challenge for that motor.we have a long flat incline that gives.stock carts a challenge.they just don't make enough torque for long.hills or inclines.on short hills.even steep ones they are OK.
