Electrical Help? Starter not getting juice
I have a '89 gas Marathon that isn't getting power to the starter. I'm looking for some wiring guidance..... The accelerator has a micro switch so when the gas pedal is pressed it activates the switch. I have one red wire that goes from the accelerator switch to the "thingy" with 4 poles (electrical component). The 4 pole "thingy" (if you are looking down into the engine bay)...the pole to the left ( #1 closest to the battery) is connected to the battery, the red accelerator connects to pole #3.
Should there be a second wire from the accelerator, and if so where does it connect? And does anyone have a schematic that I could reference? The wiring in my cart is old, and using a volt meter I'm trying to guess where the wires should connect. You should also know I replaced the key switch, and there was a broken wire that I replaced. So I would also be interested to know the wiring from the key switch back to where they connect. Thanks for your help.... Andy T. |

Humm...... thanks. It's difficult to see the diagram clearly.

I think you may be looking at the wrong one. It's the large one at the bottom labeled "89 2 stroke wiring". It's very clear.

Maybe..... I see the 89 wiring diagram, but it still isn't making sense to me. I can't tell what wires go to the on/off key switch, and I can't fire out the two switches on the F/W switch....... I'm sure it's something simple, it's just frustrating.....

Is it because the picture isn't clear or because you don't understand the diagram. If it's the latter, we can help you with that.

Re: Electrical Help? Starter not getting juice
If you are hearing a click it does not mean you have power to the limit switch. Check to make sure you are getting 12v to the limit switch from the battery source ( key switch). If not the click will not send power to solenoid to send heavy 12v to starter. I would do first a good check of grounds from the battery to frame and engine block. If you are not getting good ground you will not be getting power to anything.
Get a cheap 12 volt test light to make your test of 12v power when the key switch is turned on and follow the power. Poss also that the solenoid is bad but testing will give those details. |

Re: Electrical Help? Starter not getting juice
Andy, we can make this really easy fro you. First off as Redcloud says these EZGOs suffer from ground issues so follow the cable from the battery negative to the ground point on the chassis. Remove the wires and clean the chassis down to bare metal, also clean the cable lugs, check to make sure that there is a braid from this point to the engine block and re-assemble. Does it now crank? If not then jack up the back axle or remove the drive belt to make sure it doesn't run away with you. Now place your voltmeter across the two small terminals of the "thingy with the 4 poles" which we call solenoid. With the key on press the throttle do you see 12 volts? If not we need to work backwards, if you do see 12 volts then; Find the cable on the large pole of the solenoid which connects to the positive of the battery, connect the positive of your meter to the OTHER large pole, connect the negative of your meter to the battery negative. Now with the key on depress the throttle, do you see 12 volts?
If you see 12 volts on the small terminals but not on the big ones then your solenoid is defective. If you see 12 volts on both then your problem lies in the starter or wiring. Report back and we can continue. Dave |

Re: Electrical Help? Starter not getting juice
Thanks guys.... I ran out of time and energy yesterday, so I'm hoping to get back to this tonight after work. The "clarity" was that I was originally looking at the wrong diagram, and once I got the correct one my brain just wasn't processing the info.... I have a picture of my wiring, so I'm going to print it and the schematic to compare them. I don't think it's a grounding issue, at least not yet. I have 12V from the battery to the switch, and the reverse buzzer is working so I have 12V to F/R controller. Once I can verify I have the wiring correct then I can start chasing down other potential issues. I was running fine before, so I has to be something simple...
