What is the best way to ship a engine?
I have a 295 that I am looking to ship and wondered what method is the best way? Seems like it is too heavy for UPS or FED EX? Anybody done this before?

I went to FedEx office and bought a 16x16x16 carton. Cost $6. Bolted the engine to a 1/4" piece of plywood also 16x16 and packed the empty space with crumpled up paper. Weighs about 40 Lbs. Seal and take to FedEx. Cost to ship from AZ to PA $54. That simple.

I built a 3/8 plywood box and bolted the engine to the bottom. Cut hand holes in 2 sides for lifting. Best rate was UPS

Re: What is the best way to ship a engine?
I've shipped atv motors the same way scottyb described. With the v-twins I used a pallet and built a plywood box around it using waferboard. Remember, you get better rates shipping from somewhere that ups/fedex picks up from daily (or drop it off at their facility). We get heavy discounts with fedex at,my work so I always used their account and wrote it down as a negative on my expenses. Wateve you do, dont just put it in a heavy cardboard box and ship it standard ups or fedex. They rough on stuff during the sorting process

I've shipped a few Robbins engines via FedEx Ground using a heavy duty cardboard shipping box with engine bolted to piece of plywood cut to the inside dimensions of the box then packing paper & cardboard pieces to fill the excess space.

Re: What is the best way to ship a engine?
Fed-Ex Ground will ship anything that is under 150lbs. I would do as ScottyB suggested as this makes them handle it more carefully as in most sort facilities wont let anything with bolts/bolt caps sticking out go down the conveyor as it could rip it and they are very expensive to replace.

Forgot to include that I always cut 2 hand-holds into the sides of the box near the top (I reinforce the sides on the interior with the packing cardboard) , I think if you give them an easier way to handle a heavy package they are less likely to just "toss it around" . |
