Default Engine Issues

I have a problem with a 04 EZ-GO TXT. It is a Robins 295 cc engine with 150 to 160 psi compression, valves are adjusted, new carb and fuel pump and seems to be getting a good spark. Here are the issues, almost always (hot or cold) have to use the choke to start the engine. If you stop for a very brief time, you can sometimes pump the gas to get started again. Once started the cart runs great except sometimes when I go up a hill it seems to choke down and almost flood out. I have put three carbs on the cart in the past two years. The more weight on it the worse the problem is. Not sure if it is the same problem or there is more than one. Any ideas would be a great help.

Sounds like the jetting in the carb might be off. Running too lean maybe? Where are you finding these replacement carbs? If you have the original take it apart and look at the numbering on the main jet and compare to the one you are running now.

What about the exhaust? It could possibly be a restriction in the muffler choking it down. when you do get it running, does it start and then run a long for a little while and then start losing power, kinda like a fat man would feel trying to breathe while using a straw and running on a hot day. It is possible it could start out ok but it will not maintain that ability for long not being able to breathe. The same thing happens to cars/truck except of course on a larger scale if it happens to them. So that may be worth checking. Don't worry about the fat man reference I am one so I was not calling anyone but myself out. [If we can't laugh at ourselves we shouldn't be able to laugh at others]. Jim

I will pull the carb and check the jets. What size should a stock 295cc run?

I have removed the exhaust and checked it out. It appears to be clear. I ac ride the grandkids around the neighborhood with no problems but when we get off-road and and start pulling inclines and ditches is when it looses power.
