Default new guy, abused '03

Hi all, thought I'd registered here before but site says "no". I'd posted SOMEWHERE trying to ID a badly abused '03 EZ GO I bought a couple of weeks ago. Never worked on a golf cart before so I had an interesting day today pulling the engine out and taking it apart. It's a 295cc Robin and is pretty grizzly inside. It has a broken rod---lot of wreckage in the bottom of the case---pieces of rod and piston skirt. Doesn't look like the case is damaged, even the cyl. wall looks ok. The crank journal is ugly and I can't tell if it's scored badly or if it's wiped aluminum from the rod. I read there's an acid/chemical that will clean it up if it's aluminum. Any tips, pointers, suggestions will be greatly appreciated........ been reading 'bout engine swaps---- any replacement engines compatible with my stock cliutch/starter/generator? Don't have big $$ to spend on this and lots of other projects.............I got a million questions, thanks in advance
Howard, central Floridy

The cranks are usually fine if you clean off the aluminum. I think ezgomike said to use muriatic acid to clean them. I've never tried that, seems like I used softer wire wheel brushes and exacto knife on the last one I did.
The manual will tell you how to rebuild this engine, READ IT, there are things like oil priming (including the crank) you need to know. If you don't follow these procedures you will screw the engine up.

yep, muriatic acid will remove the aluminum from the crank. I wouldn't use anything wire to clean it though. Use a red or green scotch brite pad. If you still see a black mark on the crank, that is still aluminum. I used this on my Banshee cylinders when I roasted a piston.

Thanks, I guess I could get muriatic acid from the pool place. Today I hafta clean up some of the mess I made taking it apart------the engine had a half inch of mud and crud on the outside in addition to the goo on the inside---BIG MESS. The whole cart is cruddy and banged up, it was used at a cemetery for a work buggy. Looks like it's had a rough life. It would run, stop and go on one cylinder when I bought it. I see from looking at this site that people spend lots of time and money on their carts. Think I'd like to make this one reliable and a little cleaner just to buzz around the neighborhood. Which parts supplier would you recommend------ I'm in E. central Fl. THANKS AGAIN, Howard

you can get that acid from any Lowes or Home Depot, maybe even Wal-Mart. It should be in the paint section.

thanks s'more....... gotta go to town today, I'll get some and try it. I've been looking at parts prices for thes lil' engines, OUCH! Can buy a FEL-PRO full gasket set for a SB Chevy for less than gaskets for this engine, hmmmmm, have a ZZ4 on an engine stand............. IF the crank is bad looks like $500+ to fix it. Guess the question then is fix it or look for another engine.

Wye yes! Just take this coupon [COUPON] to the nearest Briggs & Stratton dealer for your choice of any new V-Twin Vanguard engine.
