Default 1985 Marathon GAS Forward Neutral Reverse

Hi All,

I just picked up a 1985 EZGO marathon gas 2 cycle. I'm am totally new to to golf carts. This beauty goes into forward and reverse fine but in neutral it doesn't coast and it appears it is still in gear and is very difficult to push. I guess the question is this simply the way it is supposed to be or should it disengage?

Here's a pic of the little beauty:

On a 2 cycle the motor runs in different directions Mike, to give you forward and reverse,
not sure they have a neutral because they don't have a transaxle.

Welcome to BGW

No neutral just F/R, and don't change from F to R when the engine is running

Ah! Thanks! That's kinda what I thought might be the case. In studying the motor I discovered a sticker by the gas tank that says "Check engine oil on fill up". This makes me think that this thing originally had a 4 stroke but somewhere along the line it was replaced with a 2 stroke Robin 2G. I suspect that has been rebuilt too as it has a sticker on it that says "Wiseman Performance Pistons" on the engine. I'm learning more about these things every minute! Thanks to the group!

Still easier than my Ford Powerstroke

Well is it a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke? In 85 it was a 2 stroke when it was made, let us know

No it's a 2 stroke but there is a sticker near the gas tank that has 4 stroke instructions like "do not mix Oil and Gas...check oil level...etc". Someone wrote the oil/gas mixture ( 35:1 ) on the gas tank with a sharpie. No doubt it's a 2 stoke. The original motor has been replaced. Oddly enough an 85 body with an 85 2 - stroke 2PG Robin motor.

There used to be a 2 stroke oil tank with an oil injector. That's why it says do not mix oil and gas. These engines are designed to run at 128:1 when original.

If you use a hand help GPS, you should get 15 - 17 mph.

Great info! Much appreciated! I guess the oil injector had been removed in the past and that's why one of the previous owners wrote explicit mix instructions on the gas tank. The sticker does in fact say oil injector equipped.

No I don't think so. The original Robin engine plate is still on it. There is a sticker on the side of the engine that says "Wiseco Performance Pistons" so most likely the piston was replaced when it was rebuilt.
