84 2pg not running right after HEI install
hi. Last winter my son bought 84 ezgo with 2PG. We installed new belt, carb, muffler, fuel pump. It was running OK, but not seeming at full potential. Then, a few weeks ago, it stopped---no spark. I did HEI conversion. Since then, it will start, but even at full throttle is not running fast enough to engage the clutch. Seems same in reverse. Compression is about 105. I tried new plug, no change. I am contemplating complete rebuild-- any help to diagnose issue? thanks

Re: 84 2pg not running right after HEI install
Try switching the red and blue wires to the ignition module. The HEI conversion thread also has a new plug to try.
You could also have issues with the seals wearing out. |

thanks, I had tried that earlier switching the pulsar wires--- it resulting in no start. Is there a way to check the seals?

Re: 84 2pg not running right after HEI install
You could try spraying starter fluid around the seals, but the front one is really difficult to reach. Depending on how bad the seal is, you can take off the fuel pump, and see how much pressure is coming out of the hole.

thanks I will try that later this week. If I check for pressure at fuel pump pulse input port---- how much pressure is correct? thanks

That's going to be a judgement call. You are either going to say yes, that is pushing a lot of air, or no, that felt pretty weak.

Re: 84 2pg not running right after HEI install
thanks. So if I think weak, that means seals? There is some sputtering that seems to be coming out the clutch side of engine---but not so easy to see source

Re: 84 2pg not running right after HEI install
I took off the fuel pump, there is a pretty good pulsing of pressure out of the engine port--not sure if it is enough to be considered normal or not-- I put back together, took fuel line off carb- fuel spurts out about 6" or so from end of tube---is that about normal? Not sure what to do next---if any of these things point to anything?

Re: 84 2pg not running right after HEI install
I gapped to .045----- now is like backfiring/sputtering, not starting. Not sure what to do/check next--any ideas?
