Default hawk rear axle replacement options?

first off thanks to everyone for sharing there information and tips since i am totally new to the cart scene. so i have about 500 thus far into the purchase price and new carb, but i knew the brakes need to be fixed first before i take it for a spin. that being said when i pulled the drums and hubs off i found 1 hub broken at the splines, brake lining falling off,and wheel cylinders wasted.before i drop another 400-500 on the brakes, are there any other options? i have 35 plus years as a master auto tech, and welding and fabrication skills.i do want to have reverse for odvious reasons,i had thoughts of using a peerles 700 4 speed trans and a 1 inch rear axle mounted on pillow bearings. of course i would use go kart disc brakes and a cvt to jackshaft on the engine. any thoughts, comments, etc are very welcome.Roger

i might have another idea on the weak link rear axle,i saw a video on youtube where they used a polaris 2 wd quad trans for forward and reverse. since the polaris is cvt already, this seems like a better option. i have seen polaris transmissions on ebay for under 200. go kart solid axle mounted on pillow bearings, hydraulic disc brakes, and hook the parking brake up to go kart mechanical caliper(s).

guess nobody has any ideas or suggestions. polaris trans using cvt so i have reverse followed by chain drive to 1 inch go cart style axle, hydraulic disc brake on transmission, mechanical disc for parking on rear axle.

Ahhhh the Cushman Hawk,.....1400 lbs of workhorse. I had $500 in my first one. Parts are a mother for them. I have a thread on a brake job somewhere. I bought a wheel cylinder for a 80's ford or something like that. I had my shoes rebuilt. The wheel hubs I think can be swaped out with an ezgo. The rear transaxle is a Comex a British company. Post any pics and we'll see if we can spend your money.

nice looking ride, thanks for sharing. since the rear end parts no longer exist and 1 hub is almost 300 dollars i am just going to ditch it. polaris atv trans cvt drive, solid axle wheel horse 5 bolt hubs.i think with all these parts i still will be under 500 plus be tougher and be faster.

I don't think the 1" axle is going to be strong enough. Hawk is very heavy

Where's Rifter when you need him.

the original axle is only 3/4 inch, they do make a heavy duty 1 inch axle that is supposed to not bend. i,m selling the dump body and going to build a utility bed to hold 5 gallon gas can, cooler, toolbox etc.
