Default 79 truckster ignition problems

hello: thanks for the add
I have a 79 truckster delivery that sat for fifteen years, im having trouble with the plastic arm on the points melting. I read a post about wiring the two coil system in parallel without the ballast resistor, so I tried it and now im melting the plastic arm for the points. should I wire it back to series with the ballast resistor? any input would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

The coils should be in series, and in series with the ballast resistor, if your motor is an OMC 18 or 22 hp. Putting the coils in parallel will burn up your coils and your points very quickly. (Not everything that you read on the internet is correct). The coils are not designed to run on the full 12 volt supply, not even when used in automobiles. The coils, resistor, and points will last a very long time when connected in series, the way that the OMC factory intended.

If you are having trouble getting a good spark, change the condenser (capacitor) that is connected across the points inside the timer (distributor). A weak or shorted condenser will produce all kinds of ignition problems.
