Default help finding part numbers and ideas

so finally decided to check out my steering tonight and everything is tight except for the center rod going up and down (cant remember what its called) seems like both bushings on it is shot (bottom worse then top) yes there is a little play in the steering column gears but not enough that im going to stress over just tired of going down the street and sometimes it feels like steering itself one direction or another plus i might as well change out all of the boots while i am at it late model 79 so 80 i guess

Mine is a 1988 and I have the same problem. I am going to pull the steering column and see if the rack or pinion is at fault. I hope it is the pinion for it should cost less and be easier to replace. Everything else seems tight enough to steer well.
