Default 84 Cushman converting to electric fuel pump

I have a 1984 Cushman 18 HP Truckster in need of a fuel pump replacement. Understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong?) the OEM fuel pumps if they can be had are very pricy. If low to no availability and price is an issue? I'd like to know what pressure electric pump I would be looking for? I believe it should be in the range of 3 to 6 lbs.? But I'm not sure is why I'm asking.

Does anyone have any suggestions for either a OEM fuel pump, or an electric pump of a certain pressure? If so, I'd be grateful!

Thanks,
Silverstreek

As with all carburetors you don't want much psi. Too much psi can force the inlet needle open and flood the carb. 6 lbs may be too much in my opinion. There are automotive fuel pressure regulators for carbs that have adjustments but I don't remember the lowest setting. I have used those on the lowest setting and still had a flooded carb. Some people rig up a return line back to the tank to reduce the pressure on the inlet needle.

I assume your vacuum operated fuel pump malfunctioned and is now sucking fuel into the crankcase. Have you got a pic of the fuel pump? You may be able to rig up a universal vacuum pump. All they have is 3 connections - a line for crankcase vacuum/pressure, a fuel inlet, and fuel outlet.

One of those cheap Ebay universals worked fine on the stock harley engine. listed as a B&S replacement for like$10.

Thanks to you all for the suggestions and ideas. I located a new electric fuel pump that varies fuel delivery from 1.5 to 3.5 PSI. Being the cost of that one is around $50.00, and the replacement OEM fuel pump is in the neighborhood of $75.00. I've decided to replace the fuel pump with a stock OEM unit.

Once I made my mind up to go with the OEM fuel pump I traced all of the numbers on this Cushman Turf Truckster and found it's actually a 1986 22HP. The information the person I got it from wasn't correct. I didn't know the original info was wrong until I found out there are two different mechanical fuel pumps. One for the 18 HP, and a different one for the 22HP.

Just goes to show, you can never be too careful!

Thanks again,
Silverstreek
