Towing ability?
How much could a lifted gas cart reasonably tow? I have a garden tractor that I want to get rid of in lieu of a gas cart. I can tow and drag a few hundred pounds with the tractor, can a well maintained gas cart with good tires and hitch do that?

Re: Towing ability?
I can't think of a reason why it won't work, but carts are geared mor for speed, so have less ability for towing. Don't expect to pull as much as the tractor cam, Don't expect great stability at higher speed either. Those little garden tractor trailers aren't designed to go fast. I wouldn't put more weight in the trailer than the sum of the of the weight of the riders who won't be riding with you when pulling the trailer. If just doing yard maintenance and staying off the road, you should not have a problem.
I tow a 4' X 4' Harbor Freight road approved utility trailer with my 1987 Cushman Truckster, but the Truckster is quite a bit heavier duty than most golf carts. Charley |

Re: Towing ability?
Few hundred pounds? That's EASY.
One of my carts is a 1991 jacked up gas Club Car, all stock motor-wise. Every Halloween I make a hayride out of my 5 x 8 utility trailer and tow it around with the cart. This would be a couple hundred pounds (maybe 3) for the trailer, 6 hay bales, 10-15 kids ranging from 5 - 12 years old, and a couple of adults to assure safety of the little kids. I am guessing there is 700-800 pounds total, perhaps more? The cart pulls it no problem at all. Now, I do have to watch brake functionality with that amount of weight so I take it easy on the speed. Additionally, I have the hitch welded to the frame. Some people just attach to the rear bumper. That's ok for small tows but not for heavy stuff. If you search the forums for "towing" you'll get a lot more information. |

Re: Towing ability?
Few hundred is nothing just be careful, and don't expect to go up dirt hills and stuff. I have pulled anything the cart would pull up to a 19' V8 boat it would hardly move lol. But I was just moving stuff around the yard mostly. Small trailers are pretty easy I pull a 10' one around but rarely put heavy stuff in it, I mean you can't haul a load of dirt or wood for example, but you can put a couple picnic tables in it and haul that easily.
You should put a spring and/or cut sheave on the secondary to tow stuff, they need it with a lift even if you don't tow. |
