IT STARTED! now it does NOTHING
Hi All,
I recently got a 73 Harley that would only turn over a few weeks ago & figured out the coil was bad. I replaced the coil, solenoid, points, condenser, spark plug, plug wire, air filter, fuel filter & rebuild the carb. Once it picked up the gas it took right off & sounded strong & like it was tuned pretty good, after running it a few minutes I let it shut off BUT when I pressed the pedel again to restart it NOTHING happened I have 12 volts at the battery & going into the solenoid but can't find anything past that point, not even the ignition switch. I don't hear the solenoid clicking but find it hard to believe that a brand new part died that quick. Is there possibly something that got hot & shut down? the voltage regulator is the only thing that I did't replace, could it have died that quick? I am lost Hope you guys can help me out on this one. THANKS! |

Re: IT STARTED! now it does NOTHING
Sounds like you only have a loose or broken wire somewhere since the key switch isn't getting power....or possibly a fuse. Get out your volt meter and track it down.

Re: IT STARTED! now it does NOTHING
I just come inside from putting the old solenoid back on & tryed again. The ignition switch is missing & the wires are just twisted together, when I checked them as I tryed to start it again the started turned over but VERY slow. once again I put the new solenoid on & same thing, it turned over but Very slow, I checked the voltage at the starter & it is getting 12V, could it be that the starter / generator of Fried?

Re: IT STARTED! now it does NOTHING
If your only getting 12 volts then the battery is dead and/or something is not charging.

Re: IT STARTED! now it does NOTHING
Update: after changing the solinoid back to the old one & then the new one again I determined that was not the problem. I removed the belt from the starter & it seemed to run fine, then I realized that the belt had loosened up when it was running so i put it back on & made sure it was super tight & next thing I know it was running again all of that headache because of a slipping/loose belt? I got brave & dropped the rear wheels on the ground & off I went, not trouble starting & stopping at least 10 times & yes it will run 20mph (govenor removed) I think once it got warm the belt started slipping again so all new belts & a clutch teardown is next on the list. THANKS GUYS hope my headache atleast helps someone else out.
