Default Ignition Switch Wiring - 89 Cushman B&S Vangaurd

Great forum! Maybe someone can help me out here. I just picked up a project – looks to be a 1989 Cushman UTV-Max with the 14HP Vanguard B&S.

Being that the old ignition switch would only go to the “off and run” position (not making it to “start”); I purchased a generic replacement ignition switch and key.

Here’s my issue – I was able to figure out the “Battery” and “Start” terminals pretty easy – There are three other connections to the old switch. I’m certain at least one is the “engine kill”; possibly a “ground” and maybe “power / ACC”.

The new switch is metal and has “G” post grounded to the chassis.

The old switch has two “M”s –possible motor and ground? (see picture)

Any Ideas would be helpful, but I want to make certain I get no power to the “engine kill” – I understand that it will blow the ignition module in the engine. I can check that with the meter… but I’m not certain which wire that is!

From what we can tell it's the original engine. The key was broke off and he just replaced it with a store bought ignition switch. He needs a wiring diagram or somebody with a UTV to tell him how the wiring goes. Does the "kill" ground out like a lawnmower or does it do something else. We don't want to blow up the ignition pack.

Well, I found out from Cushman the part number for the original switch that cross referenced to a Sierra MP39760 - a switch for a Johnston powered boat control - makes since because of the carburetor fuel cut-off and outdoor durability. Here is the wiring diagram incase anyone down the road need the information. Chow!

Hi Superbee – I PM’d you about your cart – I would like to know more about it.

Here are some more pictures. I got it cleaned up a couple of weeks ago. So far I put in a new ignition switch (as mentioned), plugs, oil-change and new new carburetor from Briggs & Stratton. The engine runs like a champ now.

Two more issues to tackle on this cart. First the primary clutch needs to be rebuilt – the rollers are shot and it has a broken spring. I got “hopeful” replacements ordered. I say “hopeful” because I’m not certain who makes that primary. Cushman was no help in finding any replacement parts. All they could tell me is that primary is discontinued – considering Comet is out of business and it looks like a "Comet 500", we figured it was. If anyone knows more about these, throw me a clue

Next is the front end. Someone did a real “rig” of a lift on it, plus I don’t think it came with this type of axle; under leaf spring and A-arms. It says “Club car” on the rack-n-pinion. Most pictures I could find of these they have a nice looking dropped spindle style of straight axle. Once I figure the tallest tire I can fit on the back, I will tackle redoing the front axle.

Default Crushman

I changed this tread title to follow along this build.

A bit more headway today in what I’m going to call “Crushman”. Finally got the CVT drive clutch working properly. Parts for these are scarce since Comet went out of business. I had to use weaker springs (the only replacements I could find) from a kit I found on eBay. Once I put those in (with the original worn out weights) the engine would not idea low enough to open the clutch all the way. Dumb luck I found a Salisbury “weight arm” kit at a on-line antique store for $10 complete with new bushings. The weights are much lighter (about 2.6oz compared to the 3.2oz original) and seem to match the springs better. Though I have not test drove it yet, it appears to at least disengage properly, though full engagement seems a bit higher RPM – We will see what happens on the test drive later this week.

Next is to go through the wiring for the lights and such, figure out why the engine “kill” does not work and tackle that front axle.

The fun continues!
