2001 Cushman truckster automatic transmission parts?
Hi, I am head tech at a golf cart shop that specializes mostly in yamaha, club car, and ez-go. Occasionally we get some oddball stuff in, and if its new to me, I get to learn everything about it and how to fix it, which in most cases is enjoyable.....
We just got 3 cushman trucksters, 3-wheel police meter maid editions. They have a 660cc suzuki 3 cylinder engine coupled to a 3 speed hydraulicallly operated automatic transmission that would pull out in manual 1st only, and never shift past 2nd even manual shifting. Me being a semi-experienced automatic transmission rebuilder for cars, decided to pull the unit and tear it down for diagnostics. Just as I thought, broken sprag clutch .... Looks as if somebody tossed this thing into park or between R and D while moving, and flipped the sprag backwards... Heat from driving it like this also hotspotted the inner sprag race, meaning we need 2 parts. No big deal right? Wrong! Stull Cushman wants ....ok, ready for this, $550 for a sprag clutch, and $450 for the rear planetary set!!!!!!!!!!! This might not be so bad if we could find an internal trans parts source other than the cushman dealer. But I cannot find much info on this transmission. It LOOKS very much like the Aisin-Warner unit, A41 which was used in the old RWD corollas and cressidas, but it has a 15 bolt pan, not a 14 bolt pan, making it a different unit. Does anybody have a transmission model number, or better yet, a used or aftermarket parts source for these darn things? Thanks Dan Last edited by Universal_Mechanic; 04-05-2010 at 09:03 AM.. Re: 2001 Cushman truckster automatic transmission parts?
Did you ever get this resolved?
I have a similar vehicle with maybe a similar problem except mine takes off and stays in 2nd all the time unless forced into 1st gear with the shifter. Also idles fast and then slow each 2 seconds, but that is probably another issue. |

Anyone have information on these transmissions? I have a 1996 Vanster with an Automatic attached to a 327 & would like to service it, but can't figure out what it is nor where to get parts.

You might try here.
https://www.directparts.com/ You can't get everything that Cushman once stocked, but engine and drive train parts should be readily available. I've had great technical help and prompt delivery when I've purchased motor parts from them. Charley |

Re: 2001 Cushman truckster automatic transmission parts?
Those trucksters have motors and trannys that were used in Japan for vehicles so sourcing out parts will be expensive and hard to find. There were a lot of issues with those trannys when they first came out. They were controlled by an electronic box.It was electric over hydraulic that shifted the tranny from what I remember. It has been over 10 years since I did anything with Textron.I might still have a manual for the 660 with the automatic tranny. Will look on Tuesday when back at work.

Re: 2001 Cushman truckster automatic transmission parts?
Sorry that I can't provide a direct answer, but here are my thoughts about how to find what you need. Cushman didn't make the drivetrain, steering, or brake parts. They used commonly available automotive and industrial vehicle parts where possible. The trick is to find what other vehicles used them.
A forklift repair shop may be able to help you. Most not only repair forklifts, but also other types of industrial trucks. I have had luck finding brake parts, carburetor, and engine parts for my 1987 Truckster through the one that is local to me and at lower prices than the same parts cost on Ebay. The new master cylinder for my truckster was on the shelf and cost me $31. The same part on Ebay sells for $78 - 85 plus shipping. Find the older parts guy who has been in the parts business for most of his career and he may remember these transmissions and know where to get the parts for them. I have also found that many of the parts that are used in trucksters are common automotive parts, but there is no cross reference available to find them. Again, an experienced parts guy at a local auto parts store can sometimes find an exact match if you can show him what you need. It may take him awhile, but he can usually find it. I did this with the starting solenoid, flexible brake line from the frame to the front axle, brake shoes, fuel and air filters, etc. All were commonly available on the shelf, but only someone who could remember where they saw it before, could find it. Maybe an automatic transmission parts distributor could help you. We have one here that specializes in automatic transmission and transfer case parts. Someone there might recognize the transmission and be able to get what you need or tell you what other vehicles the transmission was used in. Suzuki engines were used so maybe this is a Suzuki transmission. If that is the case maybe you can find a whole transmission in a wrecked Suzuki. If you find a source, please post what you find so others in a similar situation can find what they need. It might take you a while, but I'm willing to bet that you will find what you are looking for, at a price that is significantly better than what you have found so far. Charley |
