Cushman Drive clutch
Hi evryone, I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!, I finally got the time to pull the old 10HP Kohler and the starter/charger assembly out of my 68-73 Cushman GC400, now the problem I'm haveing is that I can't seem to figure out how to get the clutch off of the motor. There was a huge bolt in the end which I found out only holds the clutch together, so how do you get the back half of the clutch off of the motor, i'm going nuts here trying to get and so far haven't broke anything but patience is wearing thin....... Thanks!!!!

Re: Cushman Drive clutch
Hi Handyman,
The crankshaft on those engines is threaded and the back half of the clutch is screwed onto it. Once you remove the large bolt and the front half of the clutch you will need a large wrench, if I remember correctly it is 1 1/4" or 1 7/16" (the nut on back of clutch). I bought a wrench and actually had to take a grinder to it so it would fit between the clutch and the block. Those large wrenches are mighty thick! Take the cover off the flywheel so you can hold it while removing the clutch. Put the wrench on the nut on back of the clutch and give it a whack with a hammer. Once you get it broke loose it will spin right off. |

Re: Cushman Drive clutch
Thank you kindly, this has been a thorn in my side for a while now. But i have gotten it taken care of, I'm now going to see if this clutch will fit on the replacement motor I have for it. HOpefully I won't have to take it somewhere to get it machined to fit. But either way this is just an awesome hobby so any work it takes for this baby to get up and going is totally worth it.

Re: Cushman Drive clutch
Hi
I realize this tread is old, but I can't figure out how to get the back half off the clutch. I'm unsure as to which way I need to turn it to get it to unscrew from the crankshaft. All help is needed and appreciated! Thanks Garrett |

Re: Cushman Drive clutch
Which way does the motor turn when running? The clutch most likely loosens by turning it in the opposite direction if there are no set screws or other devices other than the threads to hold it on. Otherwise the clutch would unscrew every time the motor ran.
I have no experience working on these older Cushmans, but if something is screwed onto a shaft that turns it has to be screwed on with threads that tighten as the shaft turns. It would otherwise just unscrew and fall apart with the first acceleration. Charley |
