1960's cushman truckster ignition problem
Hi folks,
I have just picked up what I think is a 1960's Cushman truckster. I has a ram on the back a PTO and a 18hp pmc 2 cylinder. 3 forward, reverse and a hi lo gears. It was running when I bought it however it just died all of a sudden and refuses to start. A friend of mine checked the coil and one was dead. Replaced both coils with two new D5TE12029AB (without internal resistor) however it still will not start. The points are new, as are the plugs. I have a condensor on order. I have had a look at the ignition wiring, but I an not sure it is correct. It is currently wired as follows. There is one set of points with a condensor across it. The lead from the points goes to the negative of the first coil. The positve of the first coil is connected to the negative of the second coil. The negative of the seacond is connected to the balast resistor. The balst resistor is connected to 12v from the key. Can anyone out there let me know if the wiring is correct. Thanks. |

Re: 1960's cushman truckster ignition problem
the coils should be wired in parallel not series....or that is how my 18hp is wired from the factory

Re: 1960's cushman truckster ignition problem
I finally got my cushman to turn over and fire.
I installed two new coils in parrell and put in a new set of points and a condensor. I found that it would only stay firing if I did not use that ballast resistor. Anyway the problem now is that it will start and idle or rev for about 2 minutes, then it dies and will not start again until I remove the plugs and clean them. When the plugs are removed they are wet and a little black.Once cleaned and replaced engine will start again. I have the point gap set at 0.020 Spark plug gap is set at 0.030 (is this correct?) Carb is a KEIHIN. It sounds like it may be running way to rich, however as it was running when I bought it , I am slow to go fiddling with the carb. Has any one any suggestions? |

Re: 1960's cushman truckster ignition problem
lean the carb adjustments and if that doesn't help, check for heavy or sunken float...or leaking needle and seat

Re: 1960's cushman truckster ignition problem
Thank you for your post.
There is only one needle on the this carb. It was adjusted to about a quarter turn out. I removed the carb and opened it up. Every thing looked fine, no blocked ports that I could see. Cleaned it with carb cleaner and re assembeled. Also removed the needle and replaced, seemed fine. Refitted the card and after a lot of playing I found that I could get it to run with choke slightly on and the needle about one eight of a turn out. It runs ok but is rough with the odd backfire. I got it to run for about twenty minutes underload before it cut out and would not start. When I removed the plugs, they were dry but black. Cleaned the plugs and she ran again. I also checked the compression in both cylinders, and thay both come in at around 100 psi. Any suggestions on how I can get her to run smooth.? Last edited by aranman; 07-24-2011 at 12:08 PM.. Re: 1960's cushman truckster ignition problem
you shouldn't have to use the choke to make it run properly when warm....you have a vacuum leak in the intake system and or internal carb blockage
With it running take a can of carb cleaner and spray around ALL the connections in the intake...the rubber T, the carb to intake gasket and both intake to head gaskets....if the engine speed does not change...then go back into the carb....as it is clogged internally somewhere |

Re: 1960's cushman truckster ignition problem
Thanks for your posts I have been looking for info like this for my 72 Haulster. The wiring from the points to coils is in series so I will try it parallel. Thanks
