Repowering a cart
I am looking at repowering my Cushman Turf Truckster.
My current engine runs but is constantly fouling the plugs with oil (18HP OMC, plugs are located on the bottom.) Also it eats points and condensers. I would like to deal with a reputable company. Any recommendations? Does anyone have any experience with this company? Good or Bad. http://www.repowerspecialists.com/ Looking at getting the 18HP vanguard with the adapter kit for the clutch. Thanks |

Re: Repowering a cart
spark plug location has nothing to do with fouling...your rings are worn out, and or cylinders worn and or valve guides worn...unless.....
are you sure it has 30wt oil? and it is not overfull? the omc18 is a pretty tuff little engine and like anything if given some care they will last for decades. Mine is a 1963 and never rebuilt and runs fantastic |

Re: Repowering a cart
Thank you for your reply.
My understanding is the spark plugs on the bottom indicate 18hp omc. Therefore the reference to the plugs being on the bottom. Yes, correct oil and not over full. Granddad had several Cushman carts during the time I was growing up. I agree that they are good motors if taken care of. I think this one was rode hard and put up wet before I bought it. |

Re: Repowering a cart
yes, bottom plugs= 18hp, top plugs=22hp
I mentioned plug location and fouling because there is an old wives tail floating around that bottom plugs foul...no matter engine condition |

Re: Repowering a cart
The plugs in my cart do get really loaded up with oil pretty quickly.
I'm not sure that I am up to rebuilding an OMC engine, even if I started with a fresh short block. (Also not sure if my flywheel and other parts would fit the 22HP short block, which is the only short block I have found available.) That would be the reason I am for looking at a repower option. I guess another option might be to replace the valve guides to see if that is where the problem is. I wonder how difficult that would be..... BTW what is a 54 Barrel Spring Cushman? |

Re: Repowering a cart
Tom at CartPartsPlus can repower your machine, but I'm sure you will have to redrill your mounting plate. He can get you a Vanguard in whatever configuration you want, clutch, belt, exhaust, ignition etc. Here's a link to his site, or you can just look in the Sponsor section here. give him a call, he's easy to talk to (most of the time).....

Re: Repowering a cart
a 54 barrel spring is a 1954 Cushman Eagle motor scooter. Called a barrel spring due to visible springs on the frt wheel pivots.
Prior to replacing valve guides, do a leak down on the engine...that will show if it is rings, or guides or both your 18hp frt flywheel, rear flywheel, bellhousing, clutch, intake, carb, exhaust, blower housing, will all bolt right onto a 22hp shortblock without any problems |

Re: Repowering a cart
crazy I just had another thought to your oil usage situation...Are you sure the engine has good air flow from the cooling fan? I ask due to seeing several having the frt side of the cylinders packed with crap from mice. This crap blocks air flow, then engine gets hot, oil gets SUPER thin and then starts being burned.
Pop your blower housing off..its not difficult and check to be sure your cooling fins are clean |
