Oil Dipper too long, Suggestions?
I purchased a rebuild kit from eBay on the recommendation of a local shop (that I trust) and due the budget I'm working with. Everything in the kit checks out except for the rod and the oil dipper. It's a good inch plus too long for the oil pan. I've checked out the spec and part number for the rod this engine needs and it apparently needs a rod with a 'medium length' oil dipper. Please see the attached pic for a good view of just how long this oil dipper is compared to the pan.
So, is this safe to hack off, file down and roll with? Or do I need to get myself a rod to start with, that has the proper length oil dipper? |

Re: Oil Dipper too long, Suggestions?
The seller finally responded to me and I have some information to share. Apparently with this particular K241 engine, the company that manufactures the replacement rod only makes the one length and, should the engine require a shorter oil dipper, you have to measure the dipper on the old rod and gently remove excess from the new rod, and then sand it smooth.
I'm in a tough spot because my old rod disintegrated, but I'm hunting down that spec. Hopefully this is good info for someone else that happens across this post. |

I've cut them down in the past. You can shorten it by trimming it off with a hack saw and then filing and sanding the remainder to the shape of the trimmed off piece. Just make sure that it's short enough not to hit the bottom of the crankcase. About 1/4" clearance is good.
