Re: newbie with the 735 cushman pictures
As you can see from the pics, all I've done is wipe the vehicle down, paint the 2 rear wheels, and add new rear tires. The paint job, which I really like, I plan to keep. No decisions on the seats yet. The rust is actually no more than surface rust and the floors are solid. I will clean the engine compartment once the engine is figured out and idles correctly. Clutch and brakes seem to work fine. Will clean and pack wheel bearings this weekend as well.
ANY IDEAS AND HELP APPRECIATED. |

Re: newbie with the 735 cushman pictures
Great pictures!
It looks like you have an OMC motor. Is it an 18 hp (spark plugs on the bottom) or the 22 hp (spark plugs on the top)? I'm not familiar with your Cushman model, but think you might have better fuel pressure to the carburetor if you replace the T in the fuel line with a bypass type fuel filter. These are available through the auto parts stores and I have the part number somewhere, but not here at the moment. They look like a standard inline tubular metal fuel filter, but have an L shaped line coming out of the side. This L is the bypass connection. These filters will increase the fuel pressure at the carburetor and yet let the excess fuel flow back to the tank. Your present connection wastes all of the fuel pressure by the direct connection from the T back to the tank. A bypass filter was standard for use with these OMC motors and it may help with your idling problems. Charley |

Re: newbie with the 735 cushman pictures
I used a Purolator F20036 bypass filter in my 87 truckster with the 22 hp OMC engine. It, or an equivalent in snother brand, should be available at any auto parts store. The Purolator filter is nearly identical to the original Cushman part, and much cheaper.

Re: newbie with the 735 cushman pictures
on the 735 models a "T" on the pressure side of fuel line @ carb is proper. Although Jeff's version is not stock...it can be made to work properly....
Jeff, put the return to the tank 90 degrees to the line coming from pump to carb...thus making a straight "in" flow to carb...the excess will then return to the tank Carb looks to be a Keihin...not Carter Model N or Zenith...which tells me someone has swapped out the carb for a later model carb off another Cushman that had the Keihin carb...carb should still work fine on your engine. OMC 18hp is correct and only engine used by Cushman in the 735 models (many have swapped to the 22hp version though) I see your coils are up frt and not on the right head....do you have a ballast resistor in the 12v+ wire supplying voltage to the coils? If not you need 1. 12v+ goes from switched side of ig switch to the ballast resistor. From the resistor 2 wires go to each "+" post of each coil. The wire from the timer(distributor) connects to the "-" (neg) terminal on 1 of the coils....also that terminal at the coil connects to the other "-" (neg) post on the other coil No ballast resistor will make the engine not want to idle also Your cart is a 1963 or 1964 model year Shoot me your email addy via PM..I can email you a wiring diagram, if my above explanation didn't make sense |

Re: newbie with the 735 cushman pictures
Thanks to all for the info. I will work on the hoses, and the T , plus check the issue of a ballast resistor. Yes, I know very little about this vehicle, just that I thought it was way to cool to leave it where I found it sitting on blocks.
I will go over everybodys suggestions and make the corrections and adjustments. Hopefully it will help. Yes, it has the spark plugs underneath. Another question. As some are saying this carburator is not the exact correct one; which one is the original correct one? |

Re: newbie with the 735 cushman pictures
Cushman used 3 different carbs on the OMC 18hp and 22hp
Zenith Carter Keihin all are correct and work fine BUT....as far as I know the 735s only used Zenith or Carter the OMC18 and 22 were used in many different Cushman vehicles....the 22hp replaced the 18hp. The later 22hp I believe was usually equipped with the Keihin carbs |

JC, they are pretty cool stock...but after adding a 3 speed trans, hiway gears, air ride rear suspension, disc brakes.....they are REALLY fun!
