Default Cushman 898630 Coolant Sensor

Need part number for the coolant sensor. Fan will run when hooked to a toggle switch on the dash. But who I bought this from said the fan stopped operating on ts own and he ran it through a toggle. I don't like this set up to easy to forget to turn it on. Would like to find out more about this machine. Would be nice to have manuals for the chassis and motor. As always all suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks ,
jonelsr

Attached is the parts manual for your Cushman.

A Google search for "Cushman 898630" will bring up quite a bit of information on your Truckster.

www.directparts.com may have the motor parts that you are looking for. They had what I needed for my 1987 Truckster OMC motor. You might also find what you need from Jacobsen, since they owned Cushman in the 1990's.

I've also sometimes had luck going to my local forklift repair shop. Cushman used a lot of parts that were also used in some forklifts.
They may not have the parts cross-reference for Cushman, but if you can show them the part they may recognize it.

I don't have any experience with the liquid cooled Cushmans, but they changed from the OMC 22 hp air cooled to liquid cooled engines about 1990 or 91. Several motors seem to have been used during the 90's. Yamaha is one of them. Can you find the model number? It's 6 digits, then a dash, and then several more digits. It should be stamped on a metal plate ion the panel just below and to the side of your steering wheel. The first 6 digits is also stamped into the frame just above the left front wheel if it's a 4 wheeler, or in the same position if it only has 3 wheels. On the plate the number before the dash is the model number. The first 2 digits following the dash is the year of manufacture. In my experience the serial number doesn't seem to mean much when trying to find parts, but the model number is very important when trying to use the Cushman parts manuals.

Browsing through the parts manual, you should be able to find the section on motor cooling, then look at the exploded parts diagrams to find a reference number for the part that you want, then look up the reference number on the following pages to find the name of the part and the actual part number. It's archaic, but it works. I found and posted the manual that I sent you without actually looking through it, so I'm assuming that it's similar to the one that I use for my 1987 Truckster Model 898532.

For a coolant temperature fan control switch, it may be the same part that is used in automotive engines to control the fan. If it is, an experienced parts person in an automotive parts store may recognize it if you show your broken part to them and you may get lucky. There also might be a fan control relay in the circuit and it might be bad. Sometimes sensors can't carry the full motor fan current, so a relay is added. The sensor controls the relay and then the relay controls the fan motor. Again, I am not familiar with your model and year of Cushman.

I have found that many motor, steering, and brake parts of my Cushman are common to automobiles and forklifts, but nobody has a cross reference from Cushman to what they carry. The experienced parts clerk can usually look at the part, recognize it, and then go to the shelves and find what you need in just a few minutes. You have to be willing to do these kinds of searches when you own an old Cushman. Fortunately for us, Cushman didn't make most of the drivetrain parts themselves. They bought readily available parts from automotive and forklift parts manufacturers. The master brake cylinger for my Truckster is available over the internet for $72-78. I bought mine, off-the-shelf, from the local forklift repair shop for $31 and it was new and identical, not re-built. This same master cylinder is used in several models of forklifts. Early 70's Ford F100 pick-up wheel cylinder re-build kits are identical to the original parts in my Cushman brake cylinders and they cost me $5.60/wheel cylinder, also off-the-shelf but from the auto parts store. Since your Cushman is newer, these parts may or may not fit your Cushman. I have no idea. Just be willing to explore other avenues in your search for the parts that you need.

Posting pictures here might get you more help too. We love pictures :-)). Look for "Cushman Truckster Saved From The Forest" on this page if you want to see my truckster. It includes before and after photos.

I can't be of help on your part, but we had a Cushman sprayer that the fan would run as long as the engine was running. It was like that when I started work there and it was still working when I left 9 years later! Maybe the ones for hot weather are set up different.

Alright finally got through to someone at cushman in Georgia and the gentleman I talk to was a big help. I'm waiting for a call from the main plant in Nebraska that might provide more help. By the way Charley you got my brain back in gear to figure out the year . The first information I found about finding the year said it was in the serial number NOT. It's the last four digits in the model number. Mine being 898630- 9110. Which leads me to believe it is a 1991. The 10 might signify 10th week or month. Not important. Cushman, Ezgo, Jacobson are all a part of Textron. I included a link to Jacobson that list the parts break down showing all the parts for Cushman Turf Truckster. I don't like there prices and may get a lead on better pricing later. This was the page I was on you can put your own Model number in to research your machine. Thanks again Charley you provided a lot of useful information.

Thanks to everybody,
jonelsr

If your coolant sensor is like mine, be sure to hookup the polarity correctly. Sending a positive charge into the coolant can cause a real mess and even eat up your water pump.
