Default kohler replacement with omc 222

i have a 1980 truckster with a 20 hp kohler in it that burns more oil than gas.i also have a omc 222 that runs great.
has anyone swapped these motors because from a quick look it doesn't look easy!
i have about 29 seconds of experience on these things so any help is awesome!
thanks

Dean,

Welcome to BGW. Please take the time to edit your profile. Go to "User CP" in the left end of the second dark blue bar at the top of this page and tell us a bit about yourself and your cart (Truckster). A city and state is close enough for your location. One of us might live near you and can help better than our efforts here.

If I'm correct, your Kohler engine shaft points toward the side of your Truckster and has a centrifugal clutch on it (I don't have much experience on these and hope that others will respond with better answers than me. The OMC 222 engine used in newer Trucksters is mounted with the shaft pointing toward the rear of the Truckster. The whole drive train, clutch, transmission, and rear end is different in the newer trucksters that use the 222 engines, more like the drive train of a rear wheel drive car. I very much doubt that it will be easy to use the 222 engine sideways in your truckster, unless you make some major changes, and you would be putting an obsolete engine it that will be very difficult to find parts for. Why not try a newer Kohler or Briggs horizontal shaft engine. These should fit much better and be much easier to find parts if you need them, or rebuild your existing Kohler engine. Most of these engines are designed for industrial use and can usually be rebuilt several times.
