735 tune-up/timing
Apparently the book I bought doesn't include this info. Do I need a timing light? Where is the timing mark? Point gap? And which plug would be considered #1 ? Thanks

Re: 735 tune-up/timing
Download this Supplement Manual. It contains much about the 18 and 22 hp OMC motors in Cushmans. The rest of the manual doesn't likely apply to your Cushman, but the motor portion should be the same if your motor is an OMC. The only real difference between these two motors is the cylinders and pistons.

Re: 735 tune-up/timing
The primary of the coils on these engines are wired in series to only one set of points in the timer (distributor). The secondary of each coil feeds only one spark plug. That means that both spark plugs fire every revolution of the motor, but only one cylinder is on compression each revolution so only one cylinder fires. Some people call this "lost spark ignition" because the spark plugs fire two times for every time that it actually fires the cylinder. Since the spark plugs are directly connected to their own coil, there is no need for the high voltage part of the distributor. Only the points and the centrifugal advance are contained in the timer.
You don't need to run the engine to set the timing, but the ignition switch has to be ON. You only need a 12 volt light bulb with wires and clips to time these engines. Connect the bulb between the wire going between the points and the first coil with the other bulb connection to the engine case or frame. The light bulb should turn on just as the fly wheel rotates the timing marks past each other. Charley |

Thanks for your help. Now I'll go up there and try to fire it up.

Re: 735 tune-up/timing
Charley ,mine doesn't have the markings as in the drawing or those curved fins. I see a possible mark on the cover at the top in the center and what may be a "mark" on one of the fins (appears to be cast slightly different).
Any ideas what to use for a muffler??? Thanks ,Joe |
