Need help with piston problem
Hello. Put a new cylinder, piston, and rings in on my 79 harley cart. After about 5 hrs on the cart i started to hear bad noises and no power. Pulled the engine apart to look at piston and sure enough the piston was badly damaged. The piston was banging against the holes in the cylinder wall. Basically where the exhaust blows out. It was hitting this spot and eventually just busted out the rings and part of the piston. What did I do wrong?? This came as a kit so it was supposedly the correct sized piston for that cylinder. So what do I do next? I just want to get it running good so i can sell the cart. Don't want to sell it with a problem. Thanks for any and all help.

Did you check the 'end gap' on the rings prior to assembly?

Re: Need help with piston problem
Man, that's a bummer. I don't know how it could be anything other than those new rings failing but the forum experts might have some other ideas.
How did you tap those rings in? With a ring compressor or something else? I recall reading somewhere that rings can crack during the install but, as they are properly in place, they will work for a bit before they fail. Worse, these carts can run on two rings so, even if one breaks, those other two will keep things running while the broken ring bounces around making things even worse. |

Re: Need help with piston problem
thanks guys. I should have took some pics but didn't. I did make sure the end gap was to the spec. As for how I put the rings in I didn't use any special tool, just worked them down the piston carefully until they fit in the slot. Is this where I screwed up? For some reason even after I removed all the rings etc that was broken it sounds like the piston still ticks when it hits that hole for the exhaust (when I manually turn it over). The cylinder does not have any scratches in the wall surprisingly. No clue whats going on. Its a darn bummer though. Keep the thoughts coming please.

Did you install the piston in the proper direction?

Re: Need help with piston problem
There is a mark on top of the piston (EXH, X, or ?) that should be fitted towards the exhaust port. The rings should be retained in place by the pins in the ring grouve in the piston. If a pin is missing or damaged the ring can travel around during use and hang up in the exhaust port and cause what happened to you.
