Default Still having to mess with choke after engines warm.

My engine starts up within 30 seconds from completely cold (it's been around 40°F around here), so that's good. However I still have to play with the choke a bit when I start up after the engine is warm. It will start up right away but quickly die until I pull the choke out about a quarter, usually. Once the engine is running I can push the choke in and all is well until I stop again. This cart has plenty of power when it's running. I intend to do a muffler bbq this weekend. Anything else I should check?

Having to choke a bit means you aren't getting enough fuel when the choke's off (but you probably know that). Adjusting your carb for more gas could do the trick but most times the fuel pump isn't working right. You can rebuild or replace the pump, pretty much any 3-line vacuum pump will work. If that doesn't do the trick then you probably have an air leak somewhere that is robbing the vacuum needed for the vacuum pump to work. Cranks seals are the usual suspects.

Converting from the vacuum pump to an electric pump solves a lot of fuel issues too. I personally do this to all of my carts and swear by the conversion but that's just my opinion. Others prefer the original set up.

I am a confirmed newb, so make no assumption that I know something. :)
Are there details somewhere of the electric pump conversion? Or do you just put the thing in the fuel line somewhere and wire it to be powered through the solenoid? What type should I get and what kind of store would locally sell it?

x2 on the elec pump. any auto parts store should have one. disconnect old pump, plug vacuum line from motor, + and - to the solenoid. you'll never need choke again.

Ok, I am totally on board with this mod, but my carb is the Tillotson where the fuel pump is part of the carburetor. How then should I install it? I can't really bypass the pump since it's integrated. Also, won't a continuous flow flood the engine?

Ah. I didn't realize you had a Tilliotson on there. In that case, you can pretty much be assured that the fuel diaphrams in the carb need replaced. The external pump will still solve things though. I have one on my 1980 with a Tillotson and it works great. Same process, you just won't have to cap the supplmental vacuum line as the Tillotsons don't use it. Just put the pump between the carb and the gas tank. It'll work fine.

Your cart won't flood. Those electric pumps are very low pressure, 2-4 psi, and they cant pump enough fuel to flood these carts.

Sweet, can't wait to give it a try! I am making a trip to the scrapyard/auto parts store tomorrow. Thanks, I will be sure to let you know how it goes!

Ok. Just got done testing the mod. The good news is, it didn't seem to hurt anything. The bad news is, it didn't seem to help either.
The problem seems to be at slow engine speeds, like creeping along or starting up. Sometimes it'll start up fine, other times I have to screw with the choke. I can reliably get it going by messing with the choke, but I don't feel like I should have to once the engine is warm. Any other ideas?

Crank seals, went through the same issues, beat my head against thee wall trouble shooting. Once I replaced the seals problem solved.
