Default 73 D par cart reverse issues

I have a 73 D that I have replaced all wiring, starter generator, and most recently the forward reverse switch and cables. but one major problem still exists, the cart runs well in forward, but as soon as I switch to reverse and press the accelorator, the black wire from the generator to the voltage regulator heats up and melts, the cart never moves in reverse. any ideas?

You have a wire crossed somewhere or the wrong type of regulator. Do you have an electrical diagram for your cart?

So it tries to run in reverse but the wire burns out? Once the wire burns out does it then run? Have you confirmed that when the wire is replaced that it is charging when running in forward?

Have you check your ground wires for good contact? Main ground strap, and the solenoid ground too?

The body to engine ground is basically just for the coil. The starter/gen is not grounded to the engine. It has to 'float' because of the reversing option. It gets grounded when needed to the correct terminal by the F/R switch.

all wiring and grounding looks good per diagram, replaced F/R switch, starter generator and voltage regulator, no longer fries black wire, but only "clicks" once when shifted reverse and accelerator is applied, will not move
