Default 82 Transplant to earlier years?

Hello everyone,

I have a good friend that is restoring his fathers 4 wheel I believe 60s model Harley golf cart. He ran across an almost perfect condition late 70s model I believe cart and pulled the frame/motor and put it on his dad's old cart.

Now my question is, I have found an 82 Harley that is in running condition for pretty reasonable and he has an almost cherry body and nose (3 wheel)..... Would it be possible to hook up the body and nose to an 82 without much hassle? I know he had to do some rewiring to get it to work on his but that shouldn't be a major deal breaker as long as the 82 motor and frame will bolt up to an earlier model?

Thanks for the replies and if this will work I am sure you will be seeing more of me, or I will wait til I can find a decent older model around the area.

Thanks,
Michael

To be clear, you are saying that you want to put the 70's body on the '82 frame?

Anything is possible with a bit of effort of course. I think that, for the most part, things will line up but, going strictly by memory, I believe you may have an issue with the key switch location and possibly the choke. On the '82 the directional key switch is between the seats (I think) whereas on the earlier cart the on / off is on the nose piece whereas the f /r lever is on the floor (one switch does on / off - f /r on the '82 whereas there are separate switches on the older one). May be a similar thing with the choke cable but I am not sure. It is between the seats on the 80s carts but I can't remember where it is on the earlier ones.

At minimum, you'll have to devise a way to accomodate this difference. I'd probably extend the 82's key switch wiring all the way to the front and mount the switch there. That's where it ended up on the 90s carts.

Note that the early 80s was a tough time for these buggies. HDs were mostly unchanged from the late 60s -1980. Then Columbia acquired HD and everything was jumbled for a few years until 1985. It seems like these carts changed every year from 82-84 so a bit can get lost in the detail. Hopefully I am getting this right.

That is what I was wondering and the guy that has the front and body would be a lot more knowledgeable about it than me I am sure I just wanted to see if anybody knew on here before trying to frankenstein one together. I just know that what he took off of that cart was a shame because it looks almost perfect. And if I could get something to bolt up I would have a great looking cart for say $500. Here is a pic of the 82 that is for sale. I hate the red but the front/body of the other one is white with a rear seat as well and plenty of chrome.

Thanks,
Michael

Actually, the key /choke look like they are up front on that cart. You may be in good shape.

That front looks like its from later than 82 also but, again, everything got mixed up in the early 80s.

Thanks for the heads up! If nothing else we can work around the choke and starter if we have to, my main concern was under the hood so to speak. On his that we swapped we pretty much unhooked the body and disconnected the two bolts that hold the front of the cart to the rear end/motor. I was just curious if they truly are the same under the cart frame wise, brakes ect. I took some measurements of his tonight and am going to try and look at this one soon. The only thing I like on this one is the hard top compared to the bikini on the older one.

And to answer your question from earlier, yes 70's nose and body on an 82 rear end/motor. His is a family cart so he wants to use as many parts that he has from the orginal as much as possible so doesn't have a need for anything except for the motor/rear end.
