Starter/Generator wont stop
Something weird happened over the weekend. I have a 73 Harley gas and it has been running better then ever BUT this weekend I came to a stop and when I let off the gas pedal the started kept running. I opened the body to see what the heck was going on, sure enough the starter was running at very low speed. When I closed the body it shut off from the vibration. I run the rest of the weekend with no issues. Just looking for some insight of where to start looking for the problem. My first thought is a switch on the gas pedal??? THANKS GUYS!

Re: Starter/Generator wont stop
Sure sounds like the accelerator microswitch although I suppose your key switch could be going bad too?

Re: Starter/Generator wont stop
The microswitch at the pedal is a somewhat complex over center spring loaded mechanism so it would be a likely place for things to stick. Could also be the solenoid by the battery sticking. IF it was the micro switch turning the key off should kill it. IF it was the solenoid key would not effect it. Thinking further if it was the microswitch the ignition would still be working so it may not shut off cleanly. IF the solenoid stuck the ignition would go on and off still so the engine would stop and start as it should except for the starter still running.

Re: Starter/Generator wont stop
sounds like the gas pedal needs grease and a spring tightening. Next time pull the gas pedal back and see if the starter stops.

Re: Starter/Generator wont stop
THANKS GUYS! this is the input I was hoping for My first thought was the micro switch on the pedal was stuck because the vibration from closing the body shut it off. I never thought of the solenoid, but that makes sence too. I have had them cause weird stuff before and it seems like my luck is they last about 2yrs, so it is about time for it to start acting up. over the weekend I will try the grease and spring adjustment as Tew segested and go from there. THANKS AGAIN!

Re: Starter/Generator wont stop
Update: I sprayed the spring and linkage down good with WD40 then took some spray white lithium grease to the spring and linkage. Cleaned the button on the micro switch and run it for 2 days without any issues at all keeping my fingers crossed that the problem is GONE Sometimes it is the simple things and I may think way to much sometimes lol. THANKS!!
