Loss of compression '75D
Wow, The cart was running fine over the holiday until it suddenly stopped running. Had a few back fires. Checked electric, linkage, gas flow. All seemed fine.
Pulled the spark plug and was dry. Not getting fuel. Borrowed a compression checker. 27 lb.. I'm thinking blown rings or head gasket. With the dry spark plug, I'm leaning toward the rings as the problem. Looking for comments. Thanks Guys! |

Re: Loss of compression '75D
Not a pro just an observer. With the backfiring I would suspect timing or valves as a possibility.

Re: Loss of compression '75D
27 is WAY too low. Should be 90+ but the cart will run on a bit less.
You need a new top end my man. Rings, piston, head gasket at minimum. If you are going to do that work you may as well do the whole top. |

It does not take too long to burn these things up. They don't like to run 'wide open' for extended periods of time. They originally had a governor to keep that from happening.

Re: Loss of compression '75D
I really don't race it around but I do have a hitch on the cart and was toting some fire wood back to my camp site in a small trailer. Perhaps that put too much of a strain on the small engine. The break down didn't happen while towing.
Now I am wondering if I can get new rings from and auto parts supplier. The only specs I have are from the Harley repair manual. Bore specs of 2.75 in. (68.9mm). |

Re: Loss of compression '75D
That cart is 40 years old. Blowing rings, head gaskets, pistons, etc. is to be expected.
I would stick with actual golf cart parts for replacement. Google "Harley Golf Cart Parts" and you'll find loads of suppliers that sell engine parts for these carts. Just my 2 cents but I would spend a few extra bucks and get an entire rebuild kit that includes a new cylinder. That way everything is guaranteed to match bore-wise. Plus, who knows how that cart has been monkeyed with over the years. Replacing all of it is like pressing the reset button. That's just me though. At least get a new piston if you are going to do the rings. |
