Default check valve in the tank

i have 2 running gas hd carts. one i put the check valve in the tank after rebuilding the fuel system. the other i cleaned the system and it has no check valve in the tank. they have almost identical compression and are close in age. the one without a check valve starts easier without choking than the one with the check valve. is the check valve in the fuel tank even necessary??

Those check valves are there to make sure your pump doesn't lose it's prime by gas flowing back into the tank. If your engine's vacuum seals are good, and yours must be, then the pump won't lose prime no matter what. In that case the check valve isn't needed. That said, if it is functioning properly it shouldn't be causing any flow issues. I would clean or replace it so that, should your cart's vacuum degrade, you'll be covered.

Now, if you happen to be running electric pumps on your carts then you don't need a check valve at all. The electric pumps don't lose prime since fuel can't rin backwards through them.

Lochlin is right on. The cart with the check valve that is not starting quickly has other fuel related problems. Like a dirty fuel pump, a very small air leak, or weak vacuum due to a leak in the system. I always use a check valve for you never know when you may loose prime. I used an outboard fuel squeeze bulb foe a while on a cart I couldn't find what was causing a loss of prime.
