Harley Davidson Engine C270 -438ccm?
Good Morning,
I have been digging around looking for information on a HD golf cart that I picked up last night. I am going to attempt to get the old girl running again but I am not sure what the engine is. I looked for the ID plate but could not find it (I may need to clean her up a little to locate it). My engine ID says it is a C270 R6 438 ccm SN: 686268. If anyone can point in the direction of what carts ran this engine I would appreciate it. It does have HD operation labels on it and a HD badge on the front. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! I am no expert... But the Harley cart I had years ago was not a 440 twin cylinder. Maybe a snowmobile engine swap was done at some point?

So it looks like the engine is a 270R HIRTH MOTOR it was made around 1970. They were used in AMF and Chaparral snowmobiles. Sooooo would AMF have put a Hirth motor in a Harley golf cart but kept it badged as a Harley?

Nope. That is not a Harley Engine which were pretty much the same from 1963 - 1980. You can check the service manual here to confirm:
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/colum...63_1980_GS.pdf You may be onto something with an AMF engine swap though. I know two guys who put snowmobile engines in their HD carts. The things ran about 50 mph. I was kid way back then but I recall them having to start their carts with a pull start like lawn mowers have. |

I am sure you are right about the engine swap. I did some more digging into the engine when I got home and was able to look at it. It came out of a 1972 Chaparral snowmobile. This one has an electric start which is pretty rare for old snowmobile engines. I don't know much more about the cart, but it looks like the person who did the set up did a pretty good job. I will be curious to see what this thing will do. I guess I don't have to worry about keeping it all original now. Thanks for the answers!
