First and easiest thing to check is grounds. For testing you can just run just about any kind of wire from the body (or battery - itself) to the case of the engine. If that helps then you need to come up with something more permanent. Original was a braided cable down by one of the mounts.

My next thought based on more recent experience is that your points are junk. Just not enough demand in the world for points anymore so most of them are crap. This especially seems to go for the ones you commonly find in the cart tune up kits. I have even had issues with some of the theoretically better brands from auto parts stores. The only brand that has not yet let me down is Standard Ignition Blue Streak. Part number is DR2240x. Not all parts stores carry them anymore. Summit Racing has em. Rock Auto has em. If you have to look it up for a car look up a 1970 Chev C10 pickup with a 250 6 cylinder engine. Might as well get a new condenser too.

Other things do you have another coil to try? Does not have to be a specific one for a cart just for testing, pretty much any coil you can connect will work for at least testing. Have you tried a new spark plug? Same thing there even if you don't have the correct one try a new/different one connected to the wire and laying on the head. Sometimes you get deposits on the insulator that can cause an intermittent spark.

Yeah, make sure the back of the points plate and the part of the engine that it attaches to are good and clean also. Some dielectric grease back there can't hurt either. Those points ground through the engine.
