Default new fuel pump carb

I have a 80 Harley cart.it had a electric fuel pump on it.crazy i know. I Installed new carb due to cart having wrong carb. I cleaned out fuel tank and put in fresh fuel/oil. Can't get new carb to draw fuel on its own. If I put the Electric pump in it will work fine. Is there something I'm missing from tank to carb to not have to use electric pump?

I was reading in the forum. I have a plastic tank. Am I suppose to have a check ball strainer. If so would this cause my tilltson carb not to pump right? Are new strainers available ?

They are available. They are not that unique so you may be able to find them in a decent small engine shop if you have one close to you.

The fuel pump section runs off crank case pulses. There is a small passage through the intake and all the gaskets and spacers. If any of the gaskets are on wrong or have the hole in the wrong place the passage will be blocked.

How do hook up the vacuum and fuel when there is only one port on the carb.

there is one hose. the strainer/check ball go from the tank to a fuel filter then to the carb. note i wil only use a small motorcycle filter on mine. the large ones seem to vapor lock in the summer time. the carb has a fuel pump inside it. and note you dont always have to have the check valve. i had a 79 that ran fine without one. my 75 is a little grumpy as to the fact that i have to choke it. i may break the carb apart to see if it has a hole. also note my 75 had a electric pump added to it. i removed it when i added the check valve

The vacuum hole goes through the carb mount and the reed valve into a smoll opening to the crank case. Most of the time the fuel lines have to be primed if the pump is not strong enough to prime its self. The check valve does help from loosing prime. some folks use an outboard motor prime bulb to start a prime when needed. I have the bulb on one cart and the others have never needed it.

I wonder if he has a later carb? The carb that was on 81 and older carts was a Tillotson which has an internal fuel pump. It was a fairly compact carb that didn't have a fuel bowl like most carbs have. 82+ had Walbro carb that did have a round bowl at the bottom like you would expect to see. Since the basic engine was the same for all years the carbs will interchange. Catch is if you use the tillotson you need to have the correct intake and gaskets that have the small internal passage to operate the internal fuel pump. The intakes that came with the Walbro carbs didn't have that passage instead they had a nipple on them to connect to an external mechanical pulse pump. These carts never had electric pumps on them from factory.

Putting electric pumps on those carts isn't as crazy as you think. Many people do that rather than relying on those internal fuel pumps. The first thing I did to my carts when I got them was put electric pumps on them and I suggest it to anyone who asks. Remember, those carbs were designed in the late 60s - early 70s so that "technology" is 50 years old now. There's a reason why "newer" carts abandoned the "inside the carb" fuel pump in the 80s. They were known to not be reliable unless you really stay on top of your motor vacuum-wise.

If your cart runs with the electric pump why not leave it on? The Harley Davidson cart gods won't punish you for it! Seems like whoever installed that thing had it right, no?
