reassembling a HD clutch (was basket case) need order of parts
Ive been working on a 1979 D Model that I picked up very recently, when I got it from the previous owner I got most of the parts related to the outer clutch, but not all. I know for sure i am missing the sleeve, front floating flange (has the felt strip). Anyways Im confused as to the order of reassemble despite the exploded diagrams. In fact those lead to more questions. the actual flange (basket with three studs) has the bushing already pressed in it and appears fine, there is however an o-ring in there as well. The diagram seems to suggest that it belongs under a retainer that I simply dont have, and this one looks to have been in there awhile.
Lets start with order. Im assuming first is the thrust washer, followed by the needle bearing and its inner race. Which side of the bearing goes towards the thrust washer? one side seems recessed a bit Following that I would assume the shims go in, and the the sleeve with the basket over it? Im good on the basket assembly thats straigt forward other than my o-ring placemnet issue. Ill post some pics to clarify |

??? Anyone? I got most all of this worked out except which side of the bearing goes towards the thrust washer. I litterally have two diagrams and both are opposite!!!!

I can't help you any since I haven't worked on one of those. the service manual shows a late model and early model version but the difference between them appears to be the shaft and bolt. Maybe that diagram will help you out. Page 4-4.

Re: reassembling a HD clutch (was basket case) need order of parts
Ive starred at that exact diagram for hours, and probably lead to more of my confusion . Even the upper left corner show late and early, mine being 79 clearly a late and verifiable in the diagram with the crankshaft output. But that shows seals that are applicable to 64 to 70, and an inner race that apparently is one year only? I was just truly hoping someone would be able to say, it goes this direction and you don’t need or need a seal. The manual is a great resource, but I wish they broke it out by years, at least the diagrams to make it better. I found the attached diagram on a parts website, helpful but suggestive that the bearing goes the opposite direction from the manual.

Re: reassembling a HD clutch (was basket case) need order of parts
I started putting my 1976 clutch back together last night - I'm doing a total restoration. When I took it apart, I tried to keep everything in order. However, I may have something wrong because when I installed the springs and the outer clutch housing, it pulled the inner housing away from the starter pulley so much that the felt oil seal is visible. I'm thinking that can't be right. Hopefully I will get it figured out this weekend, and if I do, I'll let you know what order I have everything installed.

Yeah that sucks. Those clutches are a big reason why I stick with the 80s Columbias. They used "comet" clutches that are still made. They are pricey though.
Those old HDs hit Craigslist constantly. Many don't run and can be had for cheap. Heck, there are 3 listed in Western Pa right now and it's the middle of winter. You may want to consider grabbing some old donor cart as well. Not only will get your needed clutch but you'll have a bunch of other spare parts too. It's nice being able to compare things from cart to cart too. Just something to think about. I have found that those manuals are mostly accurate but they aren't complete and not perfect. Don't be shocked if you come across something the you have to against the manual on. |

Something really does not sound right there. You have this mounted on the engine / crank?
