Wiring help
trying to wire up my 82 gas HD cart for headlights and break lights using the key as the on/off for power. need help figuring out how to get power to them when in reverse without looping the circuit to the forward position at the generator. hopefully there is a simple answer out there that i am missing.

Re: Wiring help
It would be a lot easier to just hook up head lights and tail lights to a toggle switch.

Re: Wiring help
Doesn't it have a solenoid in the key switch circuit? If so hook the hot wire to the solenoid then to dash toggle switch then to lights. Ground the lights and your done. If you leave the toggle switch on it want matter because when the key switch is turned off the solenoid will turn off which in turn will cut the lights off.

Re: Wiring help
the ignition switch just gives power to the ignition via a micro switch located under the floor board. if you really want this to work i would add a relay and let the switch energize the relay. that way you wont be drawing excessive voltage from the coil. you can get a 30 amp continuous relay at any auto parts store and note a lot of light kits come with them here is a diagram

Re: Wiring help
He said he has an 82 so he has the F/R key switch between the seats. I believe the layout is still similar. A relay for the accessory circuit would still be good. You just want your relay coil connected between the key and micro switch. The key is already 'jumped' between F and R on the small side. If there is a reverse buzzer there is a diode installed to keep the buzzer from working in F.

Re: Wiring help
Yes, A relay is the way to go. It is best to keep all unnecessary current drain off of the coil. I use a toggle switch but sometimes I forgot to turn it off so I used a on lamp on the dash. The relay is still the best way to go!
