Default Need new top end??

Hello all new to the forum here as many others I have read and learned quit a bit. A buddy of mine gave me a 78 HD four wheel cart that didn't run it has 3 flat tires body is OK needs a little work but not outrageous. With that being said I was able to get it to run after cleaning the carb some new fuel line and a new battery. My original game plane was to tare this down to the frame and rebuild from the ground up as a winter project. Now knowing that it ran and drove before I took it all apart I have fabricated a lift for it to put bigger tires on it. I currently only have money in a battery and fuel line. And after talking to my locale golf cart dealer to see if he could get me some parts he ask how the motor was. This got me to thinking so when I got home I pulled the head and unfortunately I need a new jug and piston he also told my to check the the crank shaft?? I'm not sure one how to do that and he also said if there where problems in the bottom end of the motor that the build was a bust and the motor is junk?? Is this true my build is on hold until I know this is and or will be worth my time and money
Oh yes purpose of the cart is just to ride around the house and go out hunting if possible (%90 of all land it will be on is flat) lift and tires just to look good and add a little ground clearance.

OK enough rambling. How do I check the bottom end of my motor?? And when do you draw the line on the build knowing you will never see your hard earned money again??

Thanksgiving any and all insight

depends on what you want to pay. jug and piston n rings sell around 200 or more vintage carts or just google it note: some a hole wants 550 on ebay it was 150. i would replace the crank seals 12.00 each x2 and i would check to see if the connecting rod has side to side wiggle. if not put her together then check the compression with and without the muffler. if there is a 10 psi difference rock on and enjoy.

Thanks for the input I have talk to a couple bucks and have come to the decision that one of my friends is layed off and will take over the build on the old Harley. It's more what he's looking for. Me on the other hand have not yet satisfied my itch and am a little down on my self for quitting. So I'm going to try to find something a little newer that I can play with lift it maybe make it go fast. With that is there any advise on what to buy low budget gas job would be perfect. I found a 2000 club car for 1200 is that an OK price? I haven't seen it yet so I really don't know what it looks like but I was told good shape runs good and the guy is local so that helps if I can get time to the a look at it

Crankshafts don't go bad often. I wouldn't worry about that at all at this point. You can do a pretty nice rebuild on that thing for $200-$300.

Do some internet searches for a top end kit. They sell them with and without a new cylinder. Get the one with the new cylinder. Shop them around. You'll find them for well less less then $300. Like johnny said, you may as well replace those crank seals too. They are cheap. There is a very good chance that, with this work, your buggy will run like a champ.

Just a tip, if you are ordering the parts to redo the top end you may want to consider adding a couple of extra cheap parts too. I would order a couple of extra rings in case one breaks during the install or when you first fire it up. They are cheap. I would also order an extra head gasket and base gasket or two for the same reason. These extra parts will only add $20-$30 on to your total and it's nice to have them on hand should something screw up.

I have done some looking and you are both right but at this point I really for me just comes down the lift as easy as the front was to do the back has been that much harder times 10. They guy that is getting it isn't worried about a lift and I want one so like I said I think I'm better of starting with something a little bit more modern. I do however appreciate the reply's. Now only if I can find what I'm looking for( not known yet) for a price that I can afford (cheap but running) I would be set. I would like to be able to use it and build it at the same time

I'm going to look at a 2000 gas cc today guy said runs good full-service for 1200. Is there anything I should look for in particular.?? I feel as this should give me a much better platform for build over the hd

$1200 for a 2000 CC DS isn't a bad price!

Club Car made some changes mid year of 2000, (nothing really drastic)
but if your going to lift it, you'll need to know what part of the year it was made.

The serial number is on the aluminum rail just below the passenger glove box,
It will read something like this...

AG0007-xxxxxx
A = DS model
G = gas
00 = 2000
07 = 7th week of production

The production week is critical when ordering a lift... CC changed the spindles and hubs mid year,
you can also check the bearing dust covers on the front wheels'
silver/metal caps are pre-2000.5 and black plastic caps are post 2000.5
other then some other minor visual aesthetics, and the hubs... nothing else much has changed!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to keep this in mind. Hope to be posting pics and maybe start a build thread the end of the week
