69 D Utilicart Ign-Start
My problem is how does the starter quit being a starter, I have read the service manual and read and read and I do not get it, I turn the key to on and and step on the gas pedal which activates the starter now once the engine starts what tell's it to stop starting. I only have one micro switch I read that some of the carts had two or three, the harness was chewed up by the critters while parked in the back 80. What I would like to do is have a circuit for start and one for run.

Re: 69 D Utilicart Ign-Start
Nothing changes. All that happens is the engine spins the starter faster than it is being driven electrically so it becomes a generator. Its a pretty simple concept. Downside is its not the most efficient starter and its not a very efficient generator so its got limited applications.
basic circuit is battery-fuse/breaker-key-micro switch- 2 wires from there, one to the solenoid that powers the starter and the other to the ignition coil. |

Yep. After the starter spins so fast it quits using energy and starts producing it.

Question answered thank you very much, just might have a shot at this yet. This is a photo I grabbed off the web mine is bright yellow with a smattering of rust and no windshield, also missing the windshield wiper. Last edited by lockman1; 02-01-2016 at 08:04 AM.. Reason: add photo |

Cool. I would guess a windshield may be hard to come by but I don't know if I would even worry about it since I like the wind blowing through my non-hair.

Here in WI when the temp is -15 wind in the face is no fun and you say what are you putting around in the winter? mail box is 600 feet although I seriously doubt if it would even start.
What other machines did they put this engine into?? |

Engine was basically the same 67-81 and similar 82-to the 90's. I think the only mechanical difference in the utilicart was it had brakes at the wheels vs the golf carts that only had a disc on the differential.

My hat's off to you if your riding around in -15 degree weather. I think I would go to Lowes and have them cut me a piece of plexiglass and make it fit.
The HD carts and early Columbias are about like brother and sister. Here are some more differences if your looking for a donor engine. 1981+ (Columbias) do not have the flywheel so timing is a bit different. 1986+ (Columbias) come out with electronic ignition instead of points. Sometime around 1996 they started putting 4 stroke engines in them instead of the two stroke. |

Re: 69 D Utilicart Ign-Start
I believe this one run's been a couple years since I messed with it, brakes are going to be a problem as the master cyl is welded shut with rust and noway to free it up, maybe someone out there has an interchange number on the master cyl. I ordered a new micro switch as the one in the cart is broke where the threads are at. I do have to thank all of you for the help on this start run problem that "I" had some things are just to simple. How well does the generator work on these and also has anyone mounted an alternator in an aux capacity.
Was this engine ever put in a bike? Regards |
