Default choke to run,

Im new to this engine, I rebuilt the carb, new cable etc. I get it ;choke to start, No governor. Half way on launch I gotta pull -choke like prime the system? I done the fuel tank check valve, but yes, kinda like loosing prime at first go! its only the carb for fuel pump. After a few chokes everything is fine!

check the compression if it is 85-90 you are good. if it is 75 then the cylinder needs replacement or boring. the crank seals can leak and the crank case halves can leak etc. if that looks good ie no excessive oil around them then it could be a carb issue.mine had to be choked every time i started it i bought a chinese carb off of ebay for 18 bucks and it starts without the choke when its warm.

That is usually a sign of a minor (at this point) fuel system issue. Could be crank seals starting to go so you need a little richer mixture to get going. Could be a little crud in the carb jets so you need a little more vacuum to pull enough fuel. Could be the fuel pump is getting weak and needs a little more vacuum to get a good pump pulse.

My 72 D does that on the very first drive away, after that its perfectly fine. I consider it normal unless someone says its not. Heck, the engine is still cold.
