1979 HD barely moves
I have a 79 HD 3 wheel and I just recently put a fuel pump and a fuel regulator on the cart and without the drive belt on it the cart runs better than it ever has. and i notice the clutch working as it should be. When I put the drive belt back on and place it on jacks the cart tries to start but won't start. I try to adjust my fuel flow and it may start a little then it barely turns the tires.
One things I am curious about (I have tried to find the post) is what should the fuel flow rate be from the fuel pump. I want to make sure that I am not starving it or flooding it. What could be the cause of the cart not moving? If anybody can give me some suggestion of what I should check out I would love to hear them. I just went through the carb and cleaned it all up and will be putting it back on tonight. Thanks! |

Re: 1979 HD barely moves
i ditched the electric fuel pump on mine. i finally just went with a new check valve and carburetor and mine works fine. the mixture screw is 1/2 to 3/4 turn open. as for movement does the motor wind up and the wheel barely turn or is it the motor wont wind up?

Re: 1979 HD barely moves
Hah! Johnny and I have differing opinions on pumps. I only use electrics! Either method is fine.
The pump rate should be no more than 4 psi. Understand that the carb's fuel adjustment should be able to pretty much turn off the gas anyway so, as long as you don't have like some monster pump you should be ok. To be honest, if you are getting a good runner with the belt off then you may have a bad clutch holding you back. You sure, double sure, and triple sure you have the right belt? 80s era belts are just a bit different than the earlier ones. I know from experience that having a wrong belt will kill ya. I tore an engine apart once before realizing I had the wrong belt. |

Have you done a compression test? I had one that would kinda almost run on jack stands. Turned out compression was around 30.

Re: 1979 HD barely moves
Trying to run at 30 psi is actually pretty impressive. When I rebuilt my father in laws it was 50 and I could only get an occasional burp out of it. That was the cart that started my unhealthy obsession with these things.
