Default 74 Harley d4 Ignition belt

I was riding and I heard a whining and the engine stopped. Pulled the lid and saw the belt from the electric motor had slipped off. Put it back on and it slipped again. There is not enough tension. Is there a set screw that has fallen or how is this belt tensioned?

Sure, that can be adjusted. You should have slotted arm bracket holding the top of that starter on (the starter is the electric motor). Loosen that nut and bolt just a bit. There is another nut and bolt on the bottom front of the starter too. Loosen that one too. No need to take these bolts off. Just loosen them. Make sure the belt is in place, rotate the starter to tighten that belt pretty good then retighten the bolts you loosened. If your arm has no more adjustment left then you need a new belt.

There could be a third bolt under the starter towards the rear too. Those originally only had a post and clevis pin but a lot of people replace those with bolts. If so, loosen than one too when you have your adjustment done.

there should be a arm with a spring in the middle to hold tension on the belt. my main cart is a 75 and it is just like my 73

Does the assembly, in front of the centrifugal clutch attach to the shaft, it's seems very loose like a set screw is missing?

Good luck though.

my generator is wallowed at the bottom mounting holes. i used 2 brass ferrel rings to make it less sloppy. 40 plus years of operation will do that given the spring loaded tensioner. the front pin that i put the brass on haas a cotter pin and a washer to hold it in place the back pin is a bolt with nuts.

The outer part of the clutch does move in and out and if worn could wobble a bit but it should not feel like its going to fall off especially if its got the belt on it. The internal springs should keep it snug and the belt should really firm it up.

Well after getting under the cart, the Starter/generator is running fine but the fly wheel it attaches to on the crankshaft is loose and there is something rattling when I turn the bell housing on the centrifugal clutch. I guess it's a few possibilities. The clutch. The crankshaft, or the crankcase. No great options since I still haven't done a compression test. This little old cart is going to get pricey.
