loose front axle
I have a 1974 D4 Harley that had about 1/4 inch or more with the wheel mounted. I removed the wheel and bearings and all seemed correct except the oil seal was damaged. Then the axle slipped out of its mount with just slight pressure. I checked the manuals which have scant information on the axles and did not find any spacers that were missing. I am lazy and don't want to tear down the other wheel to check it yet. So I would like to know if anyone else has this problem and what the seal number is. I will have to repack the other side bearings so if no one has the seal numbers I will supply those later.

Re: loose front axle
Tew,
That number is for a 3 wheeler. Is D4 a 4 wheeler? If so sorry for the confusion. |

Re: loose front axle
Yes this one is a 4 Wheel but still can use the number for three wheel machine. I do some three wheels at times (if I have to). I have both types as personal carts.

Re: loose front axle
I see in the manual there were 2 types of wheel hubs. One for a D, DF and DC and the other for the D4. It doesn't mention D3. Each hub has different oil seal numbers.
D, DF, DC: 43732-63A D4: 43734-72 Don't know if this helps any but I thought you might want to know. |

Re: loose front axle
Thanks for the HD number. I must have missed it. I have searched the net for a while and have found the seals from $16.00 to around $5.00 the number is CR14214. I will report the other suppliers and numbers after I do some more checking. I still haven't checked why I have the play in the front axle yet due to rain and mud. I am thinking the axle is just pressed in to the steering arm and if it is I will loctite it in.

Re: loose front axle
I used the Permatex Gel squeeze red ti refit the spindle stub and greased the steering arms and knuckles. There are several brands of seals to fit; NOK AC7071E, National 352444, and National 3395. I think the latter was used on a Ford Fiesta 1978 to 1980. The later is a double lip in a metal case. ($6.29) each. Some are single lip and a plastic case. Any should work well. I saw prices from $4.00 to $29.00. The rear bearings are 1 1/16 Tapered trailer bearings and the front are 3/4 taper bearings all very common and not expensive.
