Gap between Carb inlet and AIr Filter mounting tube
Hello all,
Picked up a '76 Model D or D4. Got a rebuilt engine due to the clutch side crankshaft coming right out of the counterweight inside the crankcase. When disassembling and now assembling I never noticed anything in between the air filter tube that slides over the 4 really long mounting bolts and carb that slid on before it and there is a noticeable gap that im thinking would completely disregard the need for an air filter because air would be able to get straight into the carb. Is there anyone with a parts manual or any knowledge if there is a gasket that should go in between the two? Any help would be appreciated, like to get the old girl back on the road! |

You may not be assembling it correctly. Download the manual and see how it assembles or the carb gasket/ring could be missing.

I think the area you are talking about is supposed to have a fairly thick rubber washer. There is also about a 1" thick fiberboard like spacer between the carb and intake. If that was missing I could see the spacing being wrong. That spacer is a straight spacer so everything would still align if it was missing. I have been told those are hard to find if its missing.

Re: Gap between Carb inlet and AIr Filter mounting tube
Thanks for the help gents. It definitely wasnt there when we took it apart but we found a rubber o-ring that fits in there pretty decent. Just fired the old girl up tonight and tomorro we are ordering a new carb. We had to make a test run to make sure it was gonna run before we went to far seeing as it was a rebuild from a guy we didnt know. Anyone ever had issues with the clutch pouring the oil out around that big outside o-ring? Either that o-ring is shot or the housing might be warped.

Or you might have a bad ring. If you have an industrial supply store near by a new O ring will cost around $2.00. It is a Buna-N 163.
