Default Bigger tires?

Is anybody running bigger tires on their HD to get more speed with less rpms? Will this engine pull a taller tire? It seems that it could. All things permitting tomorrow I will try the 20 " ers off the front of my yami if they will fit.

I would be really interested to see how it works. I'm going to add about 2" of lift and would like to run slightly taller tires for the looks and a little higher top speed.

If you are only on flat ground and your engine is in top shape you may get a little more speed but if you have hills I would think it would be far from ideal.

I'd agree with 73eldo. Bigger tires will give less torque. On flat ground or even down a hill you might get faster.

Did you have a chance to try the taller tires yet? I've still been working on trying to dial-in my carburetor - too lean/too rich - and yesterday I clocked it with my GPS at 23.5 mph on a flat surface. Pretty good but I would still like to get a few more MPH if possible and still be able to go up hills.

I tried 12 inch trailer tires on my HD and it did work but the wanted speed just was not there. The engine did not have the HP to push it enough. If I could get up the hill, the down hill speed was great!

If you were doing 23 mph with 18" tires with the harley's 14:1 final drive ratio you would have been turning 6000 rpms.

12" trailer tires are what I have on the front of my clone.

Yeah, that sounds about right. It'll be interesting when I put a tach on it.
