Default Head ID

Is there a way to visibly tell the difference between the head that uses the short 1/2 plug and the long 3/4 plug?

I have a 69 that I bought not running and I am just getting around to seeing if it will run. It should have the low compression head on it that uses the 1/2 reach plug. The plug I took out of it is the 3/4 long reach plug. If the 3/4 plug were wrong would it hit the top of the piston? It does not appear to when turning over by hand.

Anyone got any advice? Is there a part number someplace on the head without removing it?

When I got my cart, it had the wrong plug in it which was a long reach plug and it never hit anything.

There probably is a part# on the head. I think the number was on the bottom on mine, which is a Columbia.

What does it look like with the plug in? How far does it stick out? The threads will usually be about flush with the inside of the head. If you have the low compression head and the long plug I would expect the threads to stick out by about 1/4 inch.

I use a short length of bent wire to measure the thread depth. Easy!

I have 2 or three heads and all seem to be high compression however the round top head Part # A16654-71 is the long reach and the short reach head is # 16654-82 it also is slightly flat on the top fins where the long reach A16654-71 is the dome top fins. Both seem to be high compression heads. I think the low compression had the plug entering more on the side of the head because the cylinder faced forward towards the steering and slightly under a tunnel in the floor. I don't know what the reach was on the early head. That engine configuration came from the Harley Topper. I really suspect heads used before 1967 were low compression. (Head # 16652-63) I think the low compression head started at # 16652-63 to (but not including) 16649-67B. So I believe all heads from 16649-67B were high compression. The reach can be determined by opening a paper clip and bending a hook on the end and using it as a depth gauge.

I looked at my 2 other carts that are newer and on the flat spot beside the fins they both state "head uses long reach plug" This 69 looks identical to the head on my 74 and 80 but is not marked to use the long reach plug.

Sometimes it is such a mystery to find out what others may have done to something in the past.

It had no point cover or points in it with the points plate stuck to the housing and broken off screws. After getting the points plate and broken off screws out yesterday I installed a newer points plate and a set of 1 piece points threw a short bp5hs in it and it fired right up and runs great. I guess I will leave the short reach plug in it for now and see what happens when I test drive it...

Pull the plug and look down the hole with a flashlight. The difference can be seen.
