Re: 77 Harley gas
Did you crank on it for a while ? If this is the case the wire couldn't handle the current going thru it for that long. Current is what makes wires get hot if they are to small to handle the load. May want to replace it if it's old it could have some broken strands thus making the cable smaller gauge than it should be to handle the load (current)

Re: 77 Harley gas
Are you sure its wired correctly? These are not that complex so they are not too hard to trace all the wires and compare to the diagrams. There are 5 terminals and 7 wires on the generator so you could come up with a combo that was wrong but still kinda looked like it could work.
The stock wiring on these was pretty oversized so I would think you would have to crank it a really long time to heat things up if everything is in good order. When I bought one of mine it would not start (or easily roll) so I drove it across the parking lot and onto the trailer running off just the battery, probably a 5-10 minute trip total. When I was finished the cables were warm and the battery in need of a charge but nothing was smoking. That was maybe 6 years ago and that starter is still running strong. Even the battery got me I think 4 years. |

Re: 77 Harley gas
I would clean the solenoid connection and battery terminals and retry. Sometimes a slight resistance will cause a connection to overheat. Solenoid terminals are a good place for this to happen!

Re: 77 Harley gas
hard starting so I pored a little gas in the cylinder Took a bit to fire up I noticed gas on the side of the starting pully Today I have confirmed low compression 60 psi forward 70 psi in reverse I'm assuming the seals are bad before I order seals is there any other parts I will need and how hard is it to change just seals or do I just rebuild the whole thing once the motor is out it will run in reverse no problem forward not so well is there any thing else to check to confirm its just seals
