Default 74 Crankshaft woes

Hi guys been awhile sense I posted a thread, hoping to get a little help. Seems as though my granddaughter, was running my old 74 HD cart a little hard while I wasn't around. Now the crankshaft on the transmission / clutch side is shot . the drive flange (key) wore a nice wide gap in the shaft. can't believe it would be repairable . does any one have a 6 spine, part # (23708-78A)crankshaft transmission / clutch side they would like to sell or a complete crankshaft assembly. or know where one could be found?? Any help would be appreciated

You might want to look at vintage parts.

i have a crank but it is seized up from being left out with the intake wide open . i plan on breaking it apart sometime but it will need work to fix. vintage has that half of the crank but they dont have complete cranks right now. maybe you can luck out with someone else.

A machine shop can weld up the hole and cut a new keyway in the shaft.

Yes sir. That's repairable right there. Heck, if you have a welder you can do it yourself. If you thing you can get the alignment right I would imagine you can center a key in your hole there then weld it in place. Clean it up with a file and be done with it.

On one of my later carts, the fan base (kinda like the flywheel on the earlier carts) has the key actually built into it and it fits into the keyway on the crank. Well, the key on the fan base broke and all of the driving we did until we noticed it damaged the keyway pretty good. I put a gob of weld on the fan base and filed it to create a new key. I then put some weld on the damaged crank and filed it to the original shape using a dremel. Worked awesome and the cart is running to this day (knocking on wood). Same theory on your cart except that the key would be part of the crank rather than the fan base like it is on the later carts.

Thanks guys for all the insightful recommendations, I know a fellow that owns a machine shop , my thought as well was to try welding and re-cutting the key slot. My concern is how strong the weld would be., the key slot would need to be cut in the same location over the weld. I like the you have had success with your similar situation on your fan base lochlin, I'm Leaning that way to get it welded, gotta get a new key first the old one is trash. I have researched the crankshaft part availability at two parts suppliers, including Vintage. But my thought is that there is a lot more work involved, and the cost for seals, gasket, and what not. Motor runs great, just concerned about the strength of the weld Any more thoughts guys?

I would think even if you weld it you need to take it out of the engine. You should replace the seals and such while you have it apart.

Do you think so Raydhd, the seals were replaced just over a year ago, doesn't even need to be choked to start. would the welding do damage to the seals if left in motor?? if so I may as well get a new crankshaft, and replace all seals and gaskets, right I was thinking that I could leave the crank in the motor to weld the key slot, whats anyones thoughts on that ? Thanks

I am not a pro welder or machinist but cannot imagine welding in and cleaning up around the weld with the crank still in the engine without hurting the seal. Usually when I try something half azzed the results are not good.

That is the clutch side so the key slot does not have to be in the same location as the old one.
