Default electric cooling fan

Since my harley/ columbia cart ate its cooling fan today I am going to try and use a go kart electric fan as a substitute method. They cool the modern lean running harley bikes with electric fans maybe this will work.Or maybe it will be some other path this cart takes.

Look at lowes at the bathroom fans. They should be cage fans. Don't know if they are close enough that you can take the cage out and modify it to fit the cart, but might be worth a shot.

Here is how someone did it on a cart I bought. All I can tell you is it apparently didn't work because this thing had zero compression. You could not even tell there were rings in the piston. The crumpled up silver pipe went into a hole in the fan housing. And as a bonus the the generator field section of the starter was burnt up presumably due to the extra electrical load.

I hope I do better than that. This fan is designed for go kart cooling, only draws 35 watts and will be mounted on the fan housing blowing the same way the engine fan did.I will certainly will post pics and report results good or bad.

I have destroyed one fan. I replaced it with a used one I got either from a member here or vintage.
It grenaded after I rebuilt my top end and was "running up" the rebuild with one wheel jacked. At maximum RPM or near it; BANG.
I have believed since that time, the high RPM caused the failure.
No problems since then, about 3 years and I am careful on downhills as a result. Engine may be capable of 6000 RPM but are all the peripherals. Just Sayin!
Good Luck

I would guess you are right about the fan and the rpms.It was fine until I put the go kart carb flange on and started getting 6000 or so rpms.If the electric fan doesn't work I was thinking about adapting something like a fan off of one of the 4 stroke clones.

Thanks for the tip. That is really a good price but I decided that the stock type of fan is not where I want to go.The previous owner had one blow and now it blew up again. One way or another I am going to find something more durable. I can't imagine that a 2 stroke generates all that much heat like a 4 stroke engine does. And again if it were a perfect stock harley that would be one thing but this junkyard dog cart is another.

Well the go kart fan was a perfect fit and the cart ran great for about 6 miles, then all the sudden shut down.PUSHED it about 1/4 mile back home and found compression is now about 60 psi.So the engine now needs a tear down and maybe there was more to the fan failure than rpms. So onto the back burner it goes and decisions to be made later.

Beware the Chinese piston pin clip. Put a piston in earlier this year and last Friday, Screech thud, no more rotation. Piston pin circlip escaped its groove.
Have ordered the top end kit currently on eBay.
Good luck
