Sounds like you may be overheating. You way want to check your fan out. The older Harley ones are more durable than the later Columbia ones but still, can't hurt to check.
Check all of your engine fins for cleanliness and everything else with airflow for that matter.

May want to check all of your wiring connection points too to make sure nothing is arching.

The fan is right in the center of front of the motor. Under the screen. Pop that screen off and you'll see the fan in the housing. The points will be in the middle, covered, with a wire coming from underneath and going to the coil. No need to monkey with that. Make sure that fan isn't loose and that all of the blades are in place. I had two fans kinda disintegrate but those were later years' carts. Make sure everything is cleaned up real nice.

Also, giving this some more thought, I would suspect a failing and overheating coil also but, as you are getting spark when the thing isn't running probably not.

Does the engine turn with the starter or does the starter turn and the belt slips after running for a while. If you cannot turn the engine over by hand lochlin has it right.
