1974 harley gas cart
I have a 74 Harley gas golf cart, I have done a complete rebuild, from crank seals, new cylinder piston rings with .004 total clearance, rebuilt carb, points, condenser, all new gaskets, I can only get 60 psi compression in forward and reverse when I use the choke it back fires out the exhaust, It acts like it want to start in reverse but not in forward. I have been fighting this for 1 1/2 years. Can somebody please help me out. Thank you

Re: 1974 harley gas cart
Have you tried a compression test minus the exhaust system? If it is blocked up it stops up the whole engine.

Re: 1974 harley gas cart
other than the crank seals were else can I be losing compression , what is the chance that my crank is worn down just enough to lose compression from the seals.

Re: 1974 harley gas cart
Crank seals do not lower compression. They cause an engine to run lean.If your compression is that low something is wrong with the rings to cylinder or the head gasket. My guess is in the ring installation.Does oiling the cylinder improve the compression?

I had a similar problem with my 74. Apparently the engine case had a small crack and was leaking slightly.

Re: 1974 harley gas cart
oiling gained 2 lbs. in forward and 5 lbs. in reverse

Re: 1974 harley gas cart
I have a 3 ring piston and I don't see any bevel on any of the rings, the head gasket is new. the manual calls for .007-017 in piston ring end gap, I have not checked mine yet, if mine is lower or higher will that have something to do with the compression
